Marco Aldaz Vice Chair, Board of Directors

Chief of Staff – Joint Information Warfare Center, Lackland AFB, Texas

San Antonio Education Partnership Board Member since 2015.

Mr. Marco Aldaz is Chief of Staff, Joint Information Warfare Center, Joint Staff, Lackland AFB, Texas. Prior to this position, he was Deputy Director of Intelligence, NATO Training Mission, Afghanistan and Director of Intelligence, AF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, Lackland AFB.

Mr. Aldaz served in the U.S. Air Force from 1974 until 2001. While on active duty, Mr. Aldaz completed tours as a Serbo-Croatian and Arabic airborne cryptologic linguist, Professional Military Education instructor and Reconnaissance aircrew on the USAF RC-135, US Navy EP-3, British Nimrod and USAF AC-130 (Gunship) aircraft. He participated in Operation Eldorado Canyon, the US Raid on Libya, Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm (Gulf War One), Operations Provide Promise/Deny Flight (Bosnia), Operation Deliberate Force, NATO airstrikes against the Bosnian-Serbs and Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan. He is a career aviator with over 600 missions and 6000 flying hours.

Mr. Aldaz holds a Master of Arts in Human Resource Development, Webster University, is a graduate of the USAF Air War College and has completed the US Government Senior Executive Leadership Development (LEAD) Program. He is also a graduate of the San Antonio Masters Leader Program (SAMLP). Mr. Aldaz is a 23-year resident of San Antonio.

He is married to Rachel Aldaz, Vice President of Human Resources – Operations, Harland-Clarke Corporation, and is an avid guitar player.

Edward (Eddie) Guerra Treasurer, Board of Directors

A CPA with over 39 years of public accounting experienc, Eddie Guerra provides assurance services to privately held companies and non-profit organizations. Eddie joined BDO in 2011 when the San Antonio accounting firm of Carneiro, Chumney & Co., L.C. combined its operations with BDO USA, LLP.

Eddie is an audit services partner in the non-profit industry group who coordinates and manages audits for not-for-profit entities. His experience includes working with local, regional and national health and welfare organizations (including A-133 single audits), membership organizations, museums and private foundations. Additionally, Eddie manages audits of privately held businesses in various industries, including manufacturing, oilfield services, wholesale distribution and professional services.

Robert Vela, Ed.D. Member, Board of Directors

President – San Antonio College

Robert Vela, Ed.D. currently serves as the 12th President of San  Antonio  College  in San  Antonio,  Texas.  One of the largest single-­‐campus community colleges in Texas, and one of the biggest in the nation, San Antonio College is the flagship institution in the Alamo Colleges District, which is made up of five distinct colleges. Vela assumed the role of President  in  August  2014,  after  serving  as  the  Dean  of Student  Affairs,  Vice President  of  Student  Affairs,  and  Vice President for Student and Academic Success for nearly six years. During that time, he also served as the Interim District Director for the Alamo Colleges District Center for Student Information in 2010.

With more than 20 years in higher education administration, Vela brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position as President. Before moving to San Antonio College, Vela held the position of Dean of Student Development at San Jacinto College -­‐ North Campus in Houston, Texas from 2005-­‐2008. As well, he served as a Coordinator/Advisor at Coastal Bend College. Earlier in his career, he held several positions at Texas A&M University -­‐    Kingsville, including: Assistant Director of Upward Bound Math and Science, Director of Teacher Development Center, Director of TexasTEACH  and  Coordinator  of  New  Teacher  Recruitment.  He  has  also  served as adjunct  faculty  for  Texas  A&M  University  -­‐      Kingsville,  Texas  A&M  University  -­‐      San Antonio, Texas State University, University of Texas Pan American, Sam Houston State University, and the University of the Incarnate Word, among others.

Dr. Vela’s personal philosophy is grounded in servant leadership, which is evident in his involvement with numerous professional organizations. He currently serves as President Elect for the National Community College Hispanic Council and his involvement in other organizations  includes:  National  Council  on  Student  Development, the  Texas  Public Policy  Committee  Representative  for  NASPA  III,  National  Association  of  Student Personnel Administrators, American College Counseling Association, Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, National Institute for Staff & Organizational Development, American Counseling Association,  National  Association  of  Developmental  Education,  Texas  Community College Teachers Association, Rotary Club of San Antonio, and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

His  honors  include  the  2015  Distinguished  Alumni  from  Texas  A&M  University  – Kingsville, 2008 National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Fellows Program, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award in Teaching, Leadership and Learning in 2007, and the Javelina Emotional Intelligence Program Award by the American College Personnel Association in 2003. He maintains his certifications as a Licensed Professional Counselor and a National Certified Counselor, and he holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University – Kingsville and Corpus Christi, M.S. in Counseling and Guidance and a B.A. in Psychology from Texas A&M University – Kingsville.

Alicia H. Thomas, Ph.D. Member, Board of Directors

Adjunct Professor – Trinity University & consultant – Moak, Casey and Associates

San Antonio Education Partnership Board Member since 2015.

Alicia Hill Thomas is the former Deputy Chief Academic Officer for Houston ISD where she was responsible for 279 schools serving 204,000 students and all Academic Services departments.

Prior to Houston ISD, she was the Associate Superintendent/Chief Instructional
Officer for North East ISD. Alicia began her teaching career in Edgewood ISD, and served as a classroom teacher, principal, and executive director of research and information technology in North East ISD. Currently she is an Adjunct Professor for Trinity University’s Tomorrow’s
Leaders program and a consultant for Moak, Casey and Associates.

Director of the Department of Human Services at the City of San Antonio

Melody Woosley is the Director of the Department of Human Services at the City of San Antonio where she oversees the City’s human services
programs including Head Start and Early Head Start, Child Care Services, Senior Centers, Family Assistance, Homeless Services, and contractual initiatives. She has oversight of a $121 million budget and a personnel complement of over 350.
Prior to her appointment, Ms. Woosley served as Assistant Director of Human Services from 2008 to November 2012 and has more than 18 years experience with the City of San Antonio’s Department of Human Services.

Samantha Price has joined Broadway Bank as the Leadership and Organizational Development Manager in the Human Resources department. Prior to coming to Broadway, Samantha worked as an Organizational Development Consultant. Other experience includes Talent and Leadership
Development Manager for Zachry Holdings and Human Resources Consultant with AT&T Wireless.

Samantha holds a Master Degree in Organizational Development from California State University, and a Bachelor Degree in Human Resource Management from San Diego State University.

Elsa Cade Member, Board of Directors

Elsa Salazar Cade, a Mexican American educator and entomologist, was born in 1952 and raised in the Lone Star State of Texas. After earning her bachelor’s degree in science education from the University of Texas, Austin, she was employed for two years as a fourth grade teacher, and for two years as a reading and remedial math teacher. When she completed her master’s degree in public school administration from Niagara University, she continued her career as a junior high school science educator in the public school system in Buffalo, New York.

Elsa, who has been named one of the ten best science teachers in the United States by the National Science Teachers Association, is credited for developing an award-winning interactive science curriculum. She has also served on the staff of the Buffalo Research Institute on Teaching for Education.

Elsa and her husband, Dr. Bill Cade, have also been honored for their humanitarian efforts, raising
money to provide shelter and life-saving equipment to benefit Haitian disaster survivors.

Morgan Jones Member, Board of Directors

Human Resources – Spurs Sports and Entertainment

Morgan Jones works in the Human Resources department for Spurs Sports and Entertainment. She develops curriculum and facilitates training courses to enhance staff development. Morgan’s areas of expertise is in communication, diversity and inclusion and team building. Morgan is a Los Angeles native but is proud to call San Antonio her new home. Prior to coming to San Antonio she managed the volunteer program for Habitat for Humanity in Los Angeles. Ms. Jones holds a Master Degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction from University of Texas at San Antonio, and a Bachelor Degree in Communication Studies from California State University, Northridge.

 

Phyllis Jendrusch Member, Board of Directors

Director of Client Services – Dress for Success San Antonio

San Antonio Education Partnership Board Member since 2015.

Phyllis Cohen Jendrusch hails from New York but has been in Texas for close to 30 years, primarily in Galveston, with relocation to San Antonio in 2008. Most of her professional experience has been in higher education – counseling; teaching; training in cultural diversity,
group dynamics, and self-empowerment; and coaching many and varied student and community groups. An undergraduate degree in English and Masters in Counseling support these endeavors.

Equally active in the community, Phyllis served on numerous Boards of Directors supporting
missions ranging from advocacy for the LGBT community, support for survivors of domestic violence, advancement of education in women’s heart health, children’s literacy and continuity for both the oldest historic Opera House in Texas and the oldest reform synagogue, among others.
The move to San Antonio provided opportunity for a new career path, employment in the nonprofit social service arena as Director of Client Services for Dress for Success San Antonio.

Now established, Phyllis chose to learn in more depth about San Antonio, with the intent to advance her community service. A participant in the San Antonio Masters Leadership Program, she graduated in April 2015, and now looks forward to “hands-on” contribution to this great city.

Allen Crane Member, Board of Directors

Assistant Vice President of Distribution Data & Analytics

Allen currently serves as Assistant Vice President of the Distribution Data & Analytics Office at United Services Automobile Association (USAA). This team provides next level insights and reporting all member-facing channels – contact centers and digital. The team is also responsible for finding efficiencies for greater effectiveness and making recommendations for cross-channel optimization.

Allen has spent his tenure at USAA leading analytical practices for digital, marketing, operations, planning, and risk & compliance. He has held analytical roles with Adobe, Dell, American Airlines, Sabre, and IBM. He also did analytical consulting with companies from Fortune 50 to start-ups, in industries ranging from financial services, transportation, manufacturing, and retail.

Allen has a Masters in Operations Research from SMU and a Bachelors in Information Systems from UT Arlington. He enjoys woodworking and technology projects, and spending time with his wife Laura and kids Maya and Diego.

Willie Ng Jr. Member, Board of Directors

Chief Criminal Investigator-Bexar County District Attorney’s Office/CEO- Blue Armor Security

Willie served with the San Antonio Police Department for 22 years as a Police Officer where he began his career as a Patrol Officer patrolling all areas of San Antonio He then served as a Detective Investigator on various criminal offenses in the Repeat Offenders Program (ROP), Financial Crimes Unit and with the United States Secret Service Task Force where he was deputized as a Special Federal Deputy Marshal with the United States Secret Service. Willie’s in-depth training as a law enforcement professional ranges from Hand-to-Hand Combat & SelfDefense,
Hand-Written Forgery, Counterfeit Currency and Credit Card Fraud to Lie Detection, Narcotics and Emergency Management Training by the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security, and Willie has a Master Certification in Law Enforcement by the State of Texas.

With an innate ability for law enforcement, Willie retired from SAPD and currently serves Bexar County as the Criminal District Attorney Chief Investigator of the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office with District Attorney Nicholas “Nico” LaHood. As the Chief Investigator, Willie
is responsible for coordinating criminal investigations for the Criminal District Attorney’s Office and other organizations. Willie leads a staff of over 50 Investigators working closely with Prosecutors and local and federal Law Enforcement Agencies to successfully prepare criminal cases for prosecution in Bexar County.

Willie attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio where he received his Master of Public Administration and is currently studying at the
University of the Incarnate Word pursuing his Doctorate in Organizational Leadership Studies.
